Questionnaire Results Analysis

After creating my questionnaire, I printed out ten copies and distributed them amongst my target audience. Now that I have received the completed questionnaires I must analyse the results. The purpose of the questionnaire was to find out more about my target audience, to ask them questions about supernatural horrors and ensure that my initial ideas for my trailer are on the right track.
1. How often do you watch Horrors?
This question was asked so that I could gain a basic knowledge of my target audience’s film habits. Results show that half of those questioned regularly watch horrors at home, where only 20% regularly visit the cinema and 30% sometimes visit the cinema. I had assumed that this was the case of my target market, being predominantly female and in their 20’s to late 30’s, they are the type of women who are pre-occupied with their career and social status; they find very little time to visit theatres. Instead they use films as a chance to unwind by watching them in the comforts of their own home.
2.       Do film trailers and film posters influence your decision to watch a film?
In order to find out how much of an impact film trailer and film posters have on the audiences decision to watch a film, this question was asked. Six out of ten people claimed that they are influenced by these types of media ‘all of the time’, two out of ten claimed that only ‘some of the time’ they were influenced and the remaining two said ‘none of the time’.
3. Please circle the movies listed here that you have seen and liked:
I provided a range of different supernatural horror films in order to find out which ones were the most popular among my target audience. Results show that “The Ring”, “The Blair Witch Project”, “The Grudge”, “What Lies Beneath” and “The Others” are the most commonly watched supernatural horrors. This question was included within the questionnaire so that I can learn the types of films that my audience enjoy and create a trailer that will appeal to them.
4. Please list any other horror films that you have seen and enjoyed which included ‘Ghosts’, ‘Spirits’ or ‘Paranormal’ occurrences:
Seeing as this is an open ended question allowing the audience to answer freely, without a provided option, It was not necessary to create a chart as the results are too vague. Some of the results included the films “Poltergeist”, “The Exorcist of Emily Rose” and “Drag Me to Hell”. I can use these answers to draw inspiration.

5. What kind of Supernatural horror movies interest you the most?
The narrative of supernatural horrors tend to take one of three routes, and they are ones that are set in modern times, including ghosts, spirits, demons, curses etc, or they are set in the past, or they integrate the gothic genre within them. I wanted to find out which type of supernatural horror appeals to the target audience the most. Results show that six out of ten enjoy both modern and old supernatural horrors, but sadly only two out of ten people opted for gothic supernatural horrors. This question has influenced my decision hugely on which type of film I should create.
6. Why do you watch Supernatural horror movies?
The final question asked the target audience what it is about horror movies that they find so interesting, they were given the option to tick one or more boxes. Results show that the appeal of supernatural horrors is all within the sense of excitement and rush of adrenaline that they provide; as well as their entertainment and attraction to those who have an interest in the world of the supernatural.
In conclusion, the questions I have asked my target market have successfully provided me with more information and guidance on how to approach my own film trailer. From this questionnaire I have learnt more about the film habits of my target audience, for instance how often and where they watch horror films, how much of an impact film trailers and film posters have and whether or not they influence their decision to go and watch a film. By listing a range of different supernatural films I can gather knowledge as to what types of film my target market like, I can draw inspiration from these films. From this questionnaire I have decided that I am going to create an old fashioned supernatural horror.
