Ideas for Costume/Hair/Make-up

The Protagonist
Outside Garments.

We first acknowledge the character dressed in her winter-weather attire as she approaches the house.

Costume

Her outfit will consist of a coat, fur scarf, leather gloves and kitten heels. I'd like her to be wearing a broach; she'd also be carrying a suitcase. I want her to maintain a look of elegance and sophistication but to also express an element of her damaged, troubled character. This will be done by combining glamorous furs, sparkling diamond broaches, beautiful voluminous hair with pale make-up and a slightly battered suitcase.

Here are some photographs I took of potential outfits:

Hair

Above, we can see an image of Kate Beckinsale from "Aviator" which is set in the 40's. Below we can see photographs of the glamorous Rita Hayworth. All of which exhibit beautifully bouncy locks of hair which is the exact look I wish to create for my main character. In order to achieve this glamorous 1940's mane, I've searched far and wide (you-tube) for video tutorials on how to achieve this look!

Make-up

I intend to achieve a look of glamour and elegance through plump reddened lips. I shall incorporate a pale complexion to express an air of isolation and anguish within my character giving her a sad yet classically beautiful look. Creating an appearance which says that this young woman doesn't get out very much, she's guarded and vulnerable. A diamond is the rough.

Accessories

 Dainty crochet gloves.

Black leather gloves.

Pearl necklace.

Casual Daywear.

The second outfit of the main character seen in the trailer is the one in which she wears whilst un-packing her belongings. This outfit would be what she is wearing underneath her coat. Here I would like her to be wearing a patterned dress of a colour that successfully establishes her mood.

Costume

This image has been taken from the film "Atonement". I love the combination of delicate colours, florals and patterns within the blouse and the skirt. It's laid-back and effortlessly stylish. An outfit similiar to this would be suitable for this particular scene as it shows my character to be a woman of innocence and purity.

Taken from the film "The Edge of Love"; I like the idea of dressing my character in youthful 1940's fashion consisting of knitted cardigans, cutsie floral dresses, fluttery blouses and pleated skirts. However, perhaps the style is slightly too playful and lively for such a meloncholy character. I may dismiss this idea, but continue to follow the direction of an outfit that portrays the character as a young girl.

These are still images from the films "Pearl Harbour" and "The Notebook". I think the safest option is to dress the character in a simple, patterned dress.

Here are some photographs I took of potential outfits:

A simple black dress with a smart collar, although I'm apprehensive that it may appear to bland.

This floral frock is very representative of the era. The colour portrays the mood of feeling 'blue'. I think this outfit is a strong contender.

Blouses that can be paired with skirts:

White-lace blouse. Feminine and delicate, representative of the characters personality.

Sheer beige blouse with attached jersey. I like the idea of dressing her in dull tones to give the impression of her life being colourless; completely drained of fun and liveliness.

Nightwear & Lingerie.

The third outfit consists of nightwear as we see the character in bed asleep.
There is also a scene in which we see the character dressing up for the party. In this section the garments are quite similar and so I have placed them under the same sub title.

Inspiration

Costume for the nightmare scene:

For the night-time scene; the main character will either be dressed in a long chiffon night gown, or a vintage styled, nightwear playsuit. Below are some images of the potential outfits.

  or...

Hair
In this particular scene, her hair will resemble a slightly more dishevelled version of the casual day-wear hair-do.

Make-up
The make-up of the character will be natural. It will look as if she has no make-up on at all. However, due to waking up from her nightmare, she will look a little flustered; blush will be applied to her cheeks.

Costume for the dressing up scene:

During this clip we see the protagonist 'dolling' herself up for the party, in which she will seduce the antagonist and take him home. This section of the trailer will show a montage of clips showing the main character putting on her hosiery, applying her make-up and putting on her dress. This is the outfit she will be wearing up until she changes into the party-dress.

A classic silk slip. Subtle and sexy.
I may also team it with a light, cotton dressing gown.

Hair
Seeing as the main character is preparing for a special occasion; one idea would be to have her hair in rollers, indicating the process of getting ready and marking the occasion.

Make-up
In this the scene, the character will look less pale and her make-up will be more glamorous; highlighting her beauty. She'll have bright red lips and dark dramatic eyes.

The Party Outfit

In this scene, the image of the main character has been sexed-up to become this confident, stunning woman. Here we see the transformation of her being a scared little girl and now, a strong and sexy woman. The outfit has to be just right in order to show it.

Inspiration
Classic Movie Costumes

Here's an outfit idea I created:

Here are some images of the garments I intend to use:

A fur scarf.
'Diamonds' Earrings.
The dress was shapeless on the mannequin, so I tried it on for size. It creates the 1940's hour-glass shape which is perfect for this scene.

Hair
Dramatically voluminous, perhaps decorated with a sparkling accessory. Perhaps, the main character could wear her hair up during this scene.

The Antagonist
As the Gardener.

Costume

Worn-out shirts exhibiting dull, earthy colours, rolled up sleeves and open collars. Giving the impression of a man-at-work.

Teamed with a pair of braces and perhaps a Barbour's hat.

Examples of images I took:

Dirty worker-boots.

Hair
Slicked back in the typical comb-over style of the 1940's, yet a little more dishevelled, with strands of hair falling down past the forehead.

Make-up
Pale face/eyes darkened with brown eye-shadow, making the character look tired, restless, sinister.

The Soldier.
